Seoul, the capital city of South Korea, is at times overlooked when it comes people planning a holiday to Asia. However, skipping a visit to this beautiful city would surely be a missed opportunity. Two main airports serve the city Seoul:

  • Seoul-Incheon International Airport (ICN) – Seoul’s main Airport and the country’s largest airport, it is located approximately 59 kilometres from the city centre. A taxi from the Incheon Airport to Seoul Station would take around 46 minutes and cost between KRW55,000-70,000 (MYR207-263). Several airlines operate flights from the airport including full-service airlines Malaysia Airlines, Korean Air and Singapore Airlines and low-cost airlines Jeju Air and AirAsia X,
  • Seoul Gimpo Airport (GMP) – Officially known as Gimpo International Airport or just Gimpo Airport, it is located some 15 kilometres from the city centre of Seoul. A taxi from the airport to Seoul Station would cost between KRW20,000-24,000 (MYR75-90) and take about 17 minutes of travel time. Airlines operating out of the airport include ANA (All Nippon Airways), Japan Airlines, China Airlines, EVA Air and Shanghai Airlines.

Best Time to Visit Seoul

The best time to visit Seoul is between the months of March to May and September to November.

Spring season is from March through May, and it is considered to be the most beautiful season in Seoul. The weather is lovely with an average temperature of 10-24 degrees Celsius, but it can get colder when night falls. Springtime also means that flowers will be in full bloom so don't miss the Hangang Yeouido Spring Flower Festival in April and the Lotus Lantern Festival in May.

Fall or autumn season in Seoul, between September to November, will have pleasant weather averaging between 10-22 degrees Celsius with occasional rain showers. It is also a beautiful time in the city with the change of autumnal colours. Some key events this season are the Chuseok in September and Hi Seoul Festival in October.

The months of June to August is summer season in Seoul which means hotter temperature averaging 27-29 degrees Celsius with high humidity. This season is also peak travel season for Seoul so expect long queues and higher flights and accommodation rates. However, summertime in Seoul also means some of the liveliest events such as the Seoul International Cartoon and Animation Festival in July and Seoul Fringe Festival in August.

The winter months of December to February can be chilly with an average temperature of -6 to -1 degrees Celsius. However, it is the perfect time to avoid the tourist crowds and a cheaper way to visit the city as flights and room rates will be at their lowest. Lunar New Year is, however, and exception as this will be the time when many families are travelling to their hometowns.

Things to do in Seoul

Seoul is a city with an interesting mix of history and modernity with palaces located in the middle of skyscrapers and commercial districts. Here are some of the best spots to visit:

  • Gyeongbokgung – The primary royal palace of the Joseon Dynasty. Also known as Gyeongbok Palace or Gyeongbokgung Palace, it houses a museum and gardens. Guided tours are free for those interested in learning more about its history.
  • Myeong-dong – The main shopping district in Seoul, said to be the ninth most expensive shopping street in the World. The area is also popular for two historical sites – Myeongdong Cathedral and Myeongdong Nanta Theatre.
  • N Seoul Tower –Known as the YTN Seoul Tower, Namsan Tower or Seoul Tower, this communication tower stands 774.3 feet tall making it the city’s second highest point. It houses several cafés and restaurants including a revolving restaurant. There are also two observatories – an analogue and digital observatory.
